improve much. a pattern going as we're well below speed. southbound 270 lanes are open but an hour commute coming southbound from 85 heading into german town. traffic slows again. you'll find if you are traveling metro's red line, this is where we have problems. they are single tracking because of an earlier issue. now we've got delays out in shady grove road. metro's red line troubles to deal with. out on the roads the top stretch of the beltway below speeds trying to get past university. northbound i 95 and 395 a tough commute. delays from court house road. as you make your way out towards the beltway. we can take that live shot. inner loop of the beltway slowing back in. all of the lanes there are open. there you go.

the benghazi consulate. >> president obama walked into this press conference a day before congress is about to expand investigations on september 11th that killed four americans including the u.s. ambassador and defended his actions. >> my orders to my team is do whatever we need to do to make sure they are safe. >> but the time line of events is still not clear and several republicans are calling for water gate style hearings. >> i'm telling you right now if we don't have a committee we're going to fail to get the answers the american people deserve. >> and much of the republican anger here is on susan rice, the u.s. ambassador who on five sunday talk shows blames the attacks on a protest on an anti muslim film. not an assault. the president defended her as he lashed out at republicans.

the army has defended paula broadwell's security clearance. she's the woman general patraeus is said to have affair with. she is former army intelligence officer. she held a high level of clearance. >> we have a check of this morning's other top stories. we're waiting to learn the identity of a man who was shot to death by a sheriff's deputy. happened last night at a home if on 63rd avenue. as deputies were serving a temporary peace order. a woman allowed a deputy into their home. as they were talking a man appeared with a gun. that's when the deputy shot him. >> also in maryland, investigators need your help in identifying this man. they say he robbed a wal-mart store yesterday and then shot a store low outside in the parking lot. police believe they found the get away car on fire in a nearby

neighborhood. >> detectives want you to look at this surveillance video. people who are persons of interest in a robbery and shooting that happened last friday morning. the video shows a woman and three men at an unidentified shoe store. dc police say the group is wanted for questioning in the case. >> increasing tensions in the middle east. three israelis were killed after a rocket fire hit an apartment building. fired more than 100 rockets over the past several days. israel responded on wednesday, yesterday, firing more than 50 airstrikes killing top military commander. president obama spoke with israeli prime minister and iterated right to self defense against the rocket attacks. company founder john

robert walker now executive chairman. always good to see you as well. i know we were talking about the fiscal cliff but what's dominating the headlines is general patraeus. and all of the players in this. we've already been there. i want to talk about what's ahead with the hearings with regard to libya. he will testify. marty, let me start with you . your impressions leading up to all of this and now are we getting to the knitty gritty. >> what's happening is it's more important is what did he find out? that's critical for us to know exactly what happened. we still don't have all the facts about what exactly took place. we need to find that out. it's important to get it done. i'm glad to see he's coming back to testify. >> we're looking here at his alleged mistress. have we passed the point as to whether

she has connection with national intelligence? >> it's pretty clear there isn't a national security problem. it was more a personal issue. so i agree put it to the side and let's go on and talk about something that's important, the american people and national security. >> was there ever a thought that he wouldn't come forward to testify in your mind when this story broke and with the hearings already scheduled? >> i thought at some point he would testify. in the initial going there was talk only the new acting head of the cia would come and testify. that was unacceptable to the hill and eventually everybody thought that they better have general patraeus go to the hill and talk about not only the investigation that he did but also the time line of what really took place there. we've had some confusing stories that i think there are people on the hill and people in the country that would like to

know what happened. we lost four people and there have been a whole variety of stories about just exactly what happened of how it happened and when it happened. general patraeus is the one who can provide clarity to that. i think his appearance was essential. and i'm glad he's doing it earlier rather than later. >> my last question and we'll move on. it seems that congress members and two former congress members yourself, seem to be upset the fbi was doing this whole investigation or knew what he knew. and they weren't told. can you fill me in on the role of congress as a sitting body. might there be hearings into all of these e-mails between the top general in afghanistan and general patraeus and his biographer? what is the thinking there? >> sometimes members of congress get outraged for all the wrong

reasons. the bottom line is the fbi was looking into something that could have been a national security risk. and i think until they finish their investigation, the question whether or not they need to inform congress depends on whether or not there's an intelligence breech. they found out there wasn't any. >> but there is a different standard for the people who serve on the intelligence committees and the congress in general. are supposed to be informed if there is a situation developing that could result in a national security breech. and this is a place where i think the chairman of the committee in the senate, in the house both believe they deserve to have information about an fbi investigation that was going on in the cia director. this is well with inside their wheelhouse. that is what you are hearing from congress. >> with two minutes left, i want to talk about another serious issue that's facing us.

john boehner and mitch mcconnel said we want to compromise. don't want the american people to deal with what could be ahead. what is going on? we all think their backdoor meetings that get done. is that not the case? >> they are having those kind of meetings. they are going to have a meeting later on today with the members of congress with leadership. look, it's very clear we need to look something serious. send the message to the markets and the american people. this election pretty much laid out what the american people want. 80% of the american people want to compromise. both parties to work together. i don't know what it will take for these guys to wake up and realize that. we have to stop this negotiating i'm not going to do this. the only thing we know for sure is rates are going up for the

wealthy. elections matter. he did win. >> i think what you have is a lot of posturing going on and it's posturing that takes you toward the negotiations that will take place. i would disagree with my friend marty that the rates have to go up. i think there's a compromise here that will assure there's additional revenue that comes from wealthy people by eliminating deductions. but a raise in tax rates will under mine the economy in significant ways. comes out of the hide of a lot of small businesses and the last thing we need at the present time is to make decisions about the fiscal cliff that take us toward another fiscal cliff next year because the economy deteriorates. there's a balance that needs to be done but a posturing gets those negotiations started. >> the nice thing about the

president is he's putting lines in the sand. one of the things i respected ronald reagan for. he had three lines in the sand. i think the president has his line in the sand. >> okay. meantime, time is dwindling for all of us. marty and bob thanks for being with us. time has ended. we'll be right back .

again already? >> can you believe it's ice she says. it is a constant 9 degrees in here. >> it is. it is very cold. >> there's a reason for that. we're preserving these amazing sculptures. this is open to the public. let's start our tour. and tell me about this year's ice. >> the theme is shrek thealls. the story is how shrek is an ogre. so they all come together and show him how to celebrate christmas and the true meaning of the christmas holidays. >> it really is amazing. you know you've been told it's ice but the colors are vibrant and the sculptures are meticulus. >> it gets shipped to us in large 400 pound blocks and the

ice carvers stack it up. that's how they achieve the height. some of these sculptures stand as 25 feet tall. and they chisel away and you see those sculptures come to life. >> all good things come from ohio. >> including our ice. >> and the ice that's where it's produced. >> exactly. >> some like 5,000 blocks. and each block weighs about 400 pounds. >> they are rectangular blocks that are sent here and our carvers start carving. all of the carving and the detail work is created here on site. >> we've done this for several years and one of the things we notice is that it seems to be a lot more spacious. a lot more room. >> yes, there is a lot more room. the attraction was built that way. it is a very high capacity attraction. we have a

president obama had his first full press conference yesterday. he said he did nothing wrong. frj the president walked into this press conference a day before congress is about to expanded on the attack in libya. he defended his actions. >> my orders to my national security team were do whatever we need to do to make sure they are safe. >> the time line of events that night are not clear. several republicans are calling for water gate style hearings. >> if we don't have a select committee, they are going to fail to get the answers that the american people deserve. >> much of the republican anger has been focused on susan rice, u.s. ambassador that on five sunday talk shows blamed the attacks on a protest over antimuslim film. not a coordinated terrorist assault. with speculation she could become the next secretary of

state, the president defended her. >> for them to go after the un ambassador who had nothing to do with benghazi and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence she had received and smerch her reputation is outrageous. >> that's interesting for the president to say something that juvenile. not picking on anyone. as we just said, four americans died. is that picking on anybody when you want to place responsibility? >> and we have learned that former cia director david patraeus will in fact be on capitol hill tomorrow with a closed door briefing. in washington, doug luzader, fox news. >> while david patraeus testifies on the attack in libya, top officials are facing numerous questions. demanded an

explanation as to why it took so long for the white house to be notified about the fbi investigation. briefed the house intelligence committee yesterday but did not provide an answer. the army has suspended security clearance. >> the mrit storm storm surrounding the cia director, president obama will pause to monitor recovery efforts from super storm sandy. he will meet with families, local officials and first responders. in the wake of that storm, two utility companies say they have received subpoenas from the new york state general. coned and the long island power authority say they are cooperating into their responses to the storm. >> president obama addressing the national fiscal cliff during his news conference at the white house. the president says he is confident an agreement can be

reached that would avoid automatic tax hikes and spending cuts. he called for comprehensive deal but that he is not going to budge on the wealthiest 2%. john boehner thinks that approach is flawed. president obama did say he is open to compromise and new ideas. wall street didn't like what it heard from the president yesterday. the dow dropped 185 points. the s&p fell 19 and nasdaq fell 37. >> detectives released a video they want you to see. people that they say are persons of interest in a robbery and shooting that happened last friday morning. the video shows a woman and three men at an

unidentified shoe store. police say the group is wanted for questioning in that case. and one man is dead and a sheriff's deputy is on administrative leave. this happened last night at a home along 63rd avenue in east river dale. deputies were serving a temporary peace order. after the woman let the deputy into the home, a man with a gun appeared. investigators have not identified the deputy or the man who died. >> also in maryland, take a good look at these videos. police are looking for the man in those photos after he robbed a wal-mart store in laurel and shot a store manager in the parking lot. we told you about it yesterday. police believe the suspect's get away car was found on fire in a nearby neighborhood. the store manager is recovering at a hospital. today's hearing for a man accused at a shooting rampage at

reports of 13 deaths. the reports cover the last four years and an analysis of records found 5 hour energy has been mentioned in 90 files with the fda. doesn't mean the product is responsible but the company that distributes it says it is safe when used as directed. disturbing news in the fight against breast cancer. african american women are more likely to die than any other racial or ethnic group. according to the cdc, african american women don't receive the same quality of care and have cancers that grow faster and harder to treat. and also less likely to get follow up care. the study looked at cancer cases between 2005 and 2009. the cdc does say better treatment and earlier diagnosis have led to an overall drop in breast cancer death. and what has more calories? a glass of soda or a glass of

wine? a new study finds both have about the same amount of calories. soda and other sweetened drinks make up for 6% of the calories that adults consume. alcohol accounts for about 5% and to put that into perspective, a 12 ounce can has 140 colonel rees. a 5 ounce glass of wine has 100 calories. new york banned big sodas. you heard about that . now france has a solution. a new nutella tax. yesterday the country senate passed a major that will triple the tax on other vegetable oils. i love me some nutella and i don't want a tax. >> you don't know what you are missing. the stuff is good. >> we said that wine and soda have about the same amount of calories. but they don't really

oil giant bp has cut a plea deal with the justice department in connection with the 2010 deep water horizon spill in the gulf of mexico. moments ago a source familiar with the deal said the company has agreed to pay the u.s. billions of dollars. and two bp employees will face manslaughter charges. the company will get a waiver from future prosecution. we don't have an exact number for you. we'll be on that story all day for you. >> officials at george washington university admit a mistake was made when calculating incoming freshman. removed the school from a list of the nation's best colleges.

roger hickey. and the co author calling on congress to be cautious about what they are willing to do to solve the fiscal crisis. good morning. glad you are here today. >> good morning. >> i'm so interested in the paper you presented congress. can you tell us about it in the findings? >> well, as you know congress has created this artificial cliff. sort of like the blazing saddles routine where a guy puts a gun to his head and say don't come or we'll shoot the economy. they are not going to push us over the cliff. there is going to be a solution to backing away from those mandatory cuts and tax increases. because nobody corporate america, nobody wants another recession. the question is what congress will do in order to avoid the cliff. what kind of agreements they

will make. as you saw yesterday, the president wants to raise taxes on the wealthy. that's one way to go in terms of getting the deficit down. we've got to remember that this whole fiscal cliff has changed the subject from full employment and jobs which is what the president went on to deficit reduction. and our economists are saying growing the economy creating jobs ought to be the most important priority unless we get the economy growing, we're never going to have the deficit down. that's what we were making the case. nobody quite knows what the congress will do in order to avoid the fiscal cliff. they could tamper with medicare and social security, for example. and that could mean changes in the cost of living index for social security beneficiaries. could mean future generations

are eligible for medication. that's a hardship for younger people who don't have anything set aside for retirement. it's going to be a big debate here. and i think the members of congress ought to look at what the voters said in the election. they didn't want cuts to social security and medicare. what they wanted was jobs and investment. and what they wanted was higher taxes on the wealthy. >> can we get there i guess without the president getting what he wants and without some of the deep cuts to some of the entitlement programs that congress is calling for? can we get there? >> i have the view that we could just get rid of the sequestration, the automatic spending and tax increases. and we can just back away from it. >> is that possible to do? >> depends on what the

republicans in congress demand. depends on especially in the house of representatives, what kind of an agreement can be made. the president has weighed in with his demand for rolling back the bush tax cuts. and that would do a big part of the job if the republicans agree to it. it's clear that the republicans are also going to be demanding across the board cuts of some kind. and that means people who go to get a pel grant to go to college, small business loans, all kinds of things could be cut across the board. if we cut too deeply, we could put us back into a recession even if we don't call off the fiscal cliff. >> is there any sort of indication that the words of these economists that you are part of this group, that somebody is listening to you. >> the voters definitely were listening. the voters in this election said we would rather

raise taxes on the wealthy than do cuts that hurt the economy. it's very clear from all the polling that we've seen and we did our own polling that the voters would like to disengage from this fiscal cliff and really focus on jobs. but there's conservative forces in the congress who really want cut, cut, cut, cut. if we do that then we are risking pushing the economy into a recession even if we don't go over the fiscal cliff. >> complicated issue. thanks for being here and making it understandable for all of us. roger hickey. thank you very much. we'll be right back. ♪

>> always is a good time. it's called ice. and features a display called shrek the halls. holly can tell us all about it. >> reporter: hey, guys. it really is fascinating when you think in terms of the numbers. 2 million pounds of ice. 5,000 blocks. each block weighing 400 pounds. 40 artists coming over carving for 30 days straight to come up with a 15,000 square foot winter wonderland. 52, that's the number of days this attraction is open. if you want to see the magic, we have a little bit of it. amanda is the special events manager as we watch a master carver at work. it really is fascinating. let's talk about how they pull this off. >> they use all of the wood carving tools. we have chainsaws but he's just going

with all of his detailed tools. we br the ice that comes from ohio. we have a factory that produces it all. this is the clear ice and there's a process which they freeze it. the color works differently. we have the food coloring we work on and make sure the colors are the right color. >> the clear ice, the white ice, and colored ice. >> the temperature is a big deal. it's not brought down to 9 degrees until everything is done. it has to be the right temperature for them to work in. it can be too cold, too warm. >> yes. and the color consistency is where that key is because if we have it too cold or too warm, it starts to melt.

and too cold, the color shrink s. it is that 9 degrees these folks have figured out that we maintain. >> he is an award winning master carver. carving for 35 plus years. come from this town no china from parven. how are they discovered? >> their festival takes place end of january, beginning of february and it runs for several weeks. >> if it first started, they would use the ice in the river. you should see, if this is amazing. >> we should go over there. >> i keep saying when this ends i'll go over there. >> i have someone else special. this is our director . and we wanted to give you an idea of

how much attention to detail. >> good morning. >> you have drawings in hand. >> i do. >> explain to me what you do. >> as art director here for the ice show. our company renders all of the architectural drawings and artistic renderings that through working with dream works, we come up with the characters, their expression and their position. >> i want people to understand how difficult this is. first of all, none of the carvers speak english. >> that's right. >> so you have to get across to them what shrek is. and you have to make sure that they chisel out the right expression and bring the character to life. >> that is correct. all of the drawings that we create, we have translated into chinese in china and overlay the translations. all of these drawings are sent to the carvers a month ahead of

take in everyday comes from our favorite foods and we don't even know it. fox medical team joins us now with the sneaky six. i'm afraid to hear this list. >> some of your favorites are on it. we're talking about sodium that is sneaking into our bodies through our favorite foods. people say i don't use the salt shaker. that's not our case. the american heart association says we need to take it down to 1500 milligrams a day. let me show you. the sneaky six. let me show you what we're talking about. do the math yourself. let's start with lunch meet. 1000 milligrams per serving . you can buy the low sodium and you might want to start. now, the bread is what surprised me. 230 milligrams. and these are general numbers but pretty accurate. two slices of toast in the morning, you are up to 460 just with the bread.

pizza is a big problem. 760 milligrams per slice. you eat two slices of pizza and you're at your daily allotment of sodium. just after those two slices. soup, canned goods. we talked about that a lot. filled with sodium. 940 milligrams per cup of chicken noodle soup. you sit down and have more than a cup of that. so those are four of the sneaky six. the other two are poultry. oftentimes, poultry is injected full of sodium to be used as a preservative and flavor. and sandwiches. you take your bread, add on lunch meat and cheese and pretty much made yourself a sodium sandwich. that's the big problem. >> very distressing. most of us like to hear we look good for our age. you say there's a real reason to be concerned if you look older than you actually

are. tell us about that. >> this is an interesting study done. 11,000 danish men and women. and the study started back in the 70s. looked at these people for 35 years and studied how they aged not just physically but with their appearance. crows feet, counting wrinkles and everything. they found people who have those signs of aging. crows feet, wrinkles around the ears were more likely to have a heart attack or suffer from heart disease. you got to control what you can. but also your doctor should be looking at how well you are aging. that could be a sign of what's happening internally. >> all right. very good to know. thank you very much for the information. we appreciate it. >> thanks, tony. you are looking good by the way. >> thank you, you too. >> we continue to follow breaking news out of maryland. a shooting involving fbi agents
